Run Workout #5 - Threshold Development
Group Workout
event-snapshot
EVENT DESCRIPTION
Threshold is the point at which the powerhouse of the muscle cell (mitochondria) can no longer produce energy (ATP) aerobically. So, to build this, we perform repeated high intensity efforts—somewhere around 7-8 out of 10 in terms of perceived intensity.

To develop your threshold fitness, we’ll be diving into longer reps of 8, 6, 4, and 2-min efforts. We’ll be bringing up the pace gradually, going from just below to just above threshold pace. This further stresses your physiology and raises your threshold speed.

In the shorter version of this workout, we focus on doing 3, 2, and 1 minute efforts rather than the longer reps above.

Long Run: 45min
Short Run: 30min

For WHOOP users – This workout is best done on a Green Recovery day. These threshold intervals will challenge you and result in a higher strain score so if you aren’t well recovered, get some rest and come back to this workout on another day.

Coach Tip: Zwift Academy Tri was developed to complete the workouts in linear order. For best results, resist the urge to do workouts out of order.

This program was designed by Dr. Dan Plews from EndureIQ. He’s worked with World Champs and Olympians to age groupers alike, in sports like triathlon, rowing, and sailing. He developed this year’s Zwift Academy Tri program, laying the foundation in key areas for triathletes training for any distance triathlon.

Are you aiming for a spot on the Zwift Academy Tri team? Be sure to complete both the Baseline and Finish Line 40km TT bike races as well as the 10km run races starting October 18.
