Racing the Sun on World Bicycle Day

The sun is setting and you forgot your bike light. And you’re still far from home. You put the hammer down because pedaling after nightfall without a light is dangerous.

Same goes for pedestrians in rural Africa. In these developing countries, racing the sun happens every day. People wake up pre-sunrise to prepare for the day. As the sun starts to rise, they’re off, heading to school, grocery shopping, or work, hoping to make it home before sunset.

They have to leave early because they often have to walk an hour or two each way. That’s why we’re hooking some of these former-pedestrians with bikes, and letting you race the sun.

We teamed with World Bicycle Relief (WBR) for UN World Bicycle Day. Join us for this event starting on Sunday, June 2nd. Your avatar will power one of the burly bicycles WBR gives folks in developing countries.

Finish one of the 60-minute rides and you’ll unlock a unique kit. To make it more fun, each event starts during an in-game sunrise, and your goal is to finish before the sun sets one-hour later.

The ride is free. But we’re encouraging you to donate. We’ll even double your money, matching the first $25,000 of donations to World Bicycle Relief.

“I’m really excited to have another opportunity to lead a World Bicycle Relief ride on Zwift,” says Eric Min, Zwift CEO and Co-Founder. “WBR’s mission is to help mobilize communities in the developing world by supplying them with rugged bikes for transport. This is something that resonates especially well amongst our community. I hope to see many out there with me supporting this great cause.”

Jordan Rapp, 6x Ironman Winner; Kristin Armstrong, 3x Olympic Gold Medalist, and individuals from clubs on Zwift are also leading Racing the Sun events.
